No More Sea Keith Jacobsen 9781846244216 Books
Just finished reading a wonderful new novel by first-time published writer Keith Jacobsen. It's a thriller that is beautifully under-stated. Inside lives that are apparently quite ordinary and humdrum, in Ayckbourn style, Jacobsen draws us into a subtle, ever-deeper imbroglio of relationships and family lives. This is a story in which literally nothing is quite as it first seems. But underlying it are deeper and important psychological themes. As a small group of women are sharing a "cuppa tea" the story creeps up on you and kicks you in the gut! For the sake of future readers, I must not give too much of the plot away. But suffice it to say it's about a young woman, Madeleine, who has an apparently successful career as an investment banker in London, England. She goes down to a Cornish village to attend her mother Ceridwen's funeral and settle her mother's estate. She meets an older man, Michael, who attends the funeral and is quite willing to assist Madeleine in renovating and leasing her mother's cottage out on scenic cliffs. He claims not to have known Madeleine's mother well. But his interest belies this. In the background, Ceridwen's death by falling off the cliffs on a stormy night is shrouded in mystery. She was known locally as a shabbily dressed unstable eccentric . So did she just go off and fall by herself, or, was she pushed ?
This is only the superficial side of the story. Underlying it are cleverly drawn characters whose psyches, emotions and actions only gradually unfold. In the process, Jacobsen explores in a very sensitive and insightful way some of the major challenges and issues of contemporary family life. At another level, this is a Greek classical tragedy set in modern times. Above all, it is the very convincing depiction of the characters that grow as the story unfolds that makes this novel such a satisfying read.
Highly recommended.
