I got to the 60% mark, quickly skimmed, then skipped to the end. And the ending was awful.

Ms Nugent is a good writer. But the story and characters in this book didn’t do it for me. So many outlandish scenarios, yet I was still bored. I just didn’t connect with anyone and didn’t care what happened (which, in the end, was pretty much nothing). Worse, though — I don’t feel like the author was connected to any of the characters, either, or cared about them. Maybe that’s why they all sounded so similar? I mean, these characters should’ve come across as a very diverse group, but instead came across as outlines of people who all had almost the same voice. I felt beat over the head with the author making sure I knew one character was trashy, one was a snob, one was fat, one was psychotic, one was loud and brash, etc, etc. There was no subtlety involved in the descriptions of these characters, or letting the reader figure it out.

I don’t expect happy endings with every book I read, but they should have some modicum of reality and reasoning, not just some abrupt, “And evil won out, everyone’s lives were ruined, the end”. Maybe she got as tired of writing it as I did reading it.

Loved it ... Fabulous escapism ... The most perfect holiday read .. A cut above the average thriller ... That mother ... Oh my god ..! ... Great twists and turns ... Even the house "Avalon" seems to take on a persona ... I loved this X
I gave up on the book about 2/3 of the way through. Overall, poorly written. Plot is impossible. One of the main characters is killed off in one paragraph with a heart attack. Another begins having an affair with her psychiatrist in one paragraph. There is no transition in these important events. Again poor writing. I regret having read as far as I did.
This is a really excellent book, and I particularly enjoyed it because the story takes place in and around Dublin, my native city. I really love the writing style and the way the story is narrated by several of the main characters. I got hooked on the story from the very first sentence and found it hard to put down. Some readers may find the ending disappointing, in that the ending is a bit different from what most readers would expect, and probably hope, however I won't elaborate as I don't want to spoil the book.

I would highly recommend this book. (Once I finished it I immediately bought the next novel "Unravelling Oliver" by the same author).

This book just didn't do it for me. I've read many psychological thrillers and what not, but there were times when I felt like I was reading a book that was so far away from reality. There wasn't a single character that I particularly cared about, quite frankly because the author didn't seem to care about them either. The plot lines didn't make much sense and I hated the ending. All that build up for evil to win out. I wasn't expecting a happy ending, per se, but at least one that made more sense, I was hoping actions at least had some form of consequences to these characters.
I think there should be a new fiction genre called The Best Books Ever. If there were a genre called The Best Books Ever this book would be the Best Book Ever in the genre Best Books Ever.

This book is so much dark and creepy fun. I absolutely loved it from the starting line "My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it." to the "WTF did I just read?" ending.

The story is told from three points of view in alternating chapters. The in-flipping-sane mother, Lydia, her over-nurtured obese son, Laurence and the sister of the aforementioned murder victim, Karen. This is most certainly a character driven book with the murder serving as a link between the characters. This is not a murder mystery or a thriller, it's not horror....I honestly don't know how to describe it other than pure brilliance. It's been a long time since a book has made me lol and I know it seems absurd that a "dark and creepy" book could elicit that sort reaction but it's true. Liz Nugent has masterfully weaved these profoundly flawed characters into a dysfunction junction that I never wanted to leave. My first read by Nugent but certainly not my last, I have already bought Unraveling Oliver.
I read a lot of British and Irish suspense fiction and Lying In Wait is one of the most chilling books I've read in many years. The characters are well developed and complex and the plot is tightly woven. The ending is so very dark it is unforgettable.

I kept seeing this book everywhere, and couldn't WAIT to read it. So when it landed on a sale for $3.99, I snapped it right up. The first night I started reading it, it kept me up until around 2 AM. I couldn't stop.

I don't like to write book reviews that include any sort of synopsis. Not only because I personally prefer to go in blind, or semi-blind, but it's easy enough to glance at the description on the Goodreads, , or whatever page and I feel it to be quite redundant. So I will just say that, like most books I read, this is a murder story that doesn't really go the way you think it will. It's not a MYSTERY, because the opening detail reveals what happened and who did it. The interesting part of this story is how things spiral out of control from there, and how many peoples lives this very huge mistake shapes and changes.

I finished the book this morning and I feel...weird. Disturbed. Dirty. What a great book. There is some serious creepy Oedipal vibes happening between Lydia and her son, Laurence. I got kind of a V.C. Andrews sense from the writing style. I am haunted - the subject matter could have been spun very badly. It could have been trite, or oversexed, or cliche. Instead, Liz Nugent has struck a perfect macabre balance and woven a tale that will make you feel unsettled, fascinated, and shaken.
