The Book of Luke Jenny O'Connell Books

Emily Abbott is a nice girl at heart. She follows the rules of etiquette and always tries to please those around her. Then she gets burned when her family decides to move back to their hometown in Massachusetts, halfway through her senior year, and her boyfriend dumps her the day she leaves.

Once she gets home, she meets up with her two best friends and the three take it upon themselves to write a dating guide for boys. When it's decided that Emily will have to test the guide on fellow senior, Luke Preston, the real fun begins.

Many aspects of this novel unfold quite predictably. However, the characters are well-written and ultimately sympathetic. Emily finds herself between the proverbial "rock and hard place" when she feels she must choose between her friends and a boy and it's interesting to hear her thought process throughout.

My only complaint is that the set-up was a little long-winded and then the conclusion turned into a bit of a "lightbulb" moment for Emily. However, it wasn't all mush and you can certainly tell that lessons were learned.

This is a great read for anyone who's ever tried to change someone else. It's a good reminder that, in trying, you may actually only be changing yourself - for the better or the worse.

The Book of Luke Jenny O'Connell Books Reviews

Great book! The only things that annoyed me were, 1. The names are SO common. Luke, Emily, Lucy, etc. 2. If a guy wrote a book about how terrible girls were, I wouldn't overreact and hate the guy like the guys hated Emily. The book felt like you were walking through a fog half asleep. Not very detailed. Pay close attention to the Guys Guide Tip at the beginning of each chapter. The author recycles some. Now, for my perspective on the book

Emily had the perfect life and perfect family. That is, until her boyfriend breaks up wih her and she moves back to Boston, where she hadn't been in 3 years, and her dad stays in Chicago instead of moving back with her. Now after years of being the nice girl with her mothers Etiquette lessons, Emily decides to be not-so-nice. Her two old best friends, Josie and Lucy, and her quickly reunite and Emily learns that Luke, the boy nobody noticed, became Luke, the gorgeous senior, king of the school, cheated on Josie while he thought she was away in the Bahamas. Even more, he broke up with her by email! So as Emily, Josie, and Lucy form a plan to get back at Luke, Emily falls for him. Will Emily sacrifice her best friends to be with Luke, or sacrifice Luke to stay friends with Josie and Lucy?
Well, I normally hate the books that are like girl meets boy in her high school, girl falls in love with the boy, they fight because she caught him with another girl, bla bla bla. The typical teenage high school romance. And I thought (at first) that this book was going to be like that. I decided to buy it because of the reviews that said it was a great book and they were right.

I laughed so much while reading this book. It really is very funny. You get into the book since the first page, and I just couldn`t put it down. The only reason why I put four stars is because I think the ending was really, like, fast-pacing. I mean, Emily (the protagonist of the book) has this huge problem, and the book tells you how this problem develops, and you are sooo into it, and then it resolves. Very fast. I mean, it makes you think that the author had to finish the book quickly, and resolved the problems in like, 9 pages, and its a 291 page-book.

Despite this, it is a VERY good book. For me, it was wonderful how it showed you the transformation of a girl who was nice, and became a girl who was... a bitch. But a lovable bitch. And I had enormous fun reading the things that guys do we cant understand, and the tips written before the chapters.

In conclusion this book is awesome if you can, buy it.
I liked the book, but the thing was well, Emily. Okay so the whole story is that Emily is dumped by her boyfriend on moving day (she's moving back to her hometown) and her dad is staying in Chicago. So she thinks guys are a waste of time and basically wrong! She moves back to her old school and friends. Now one guy happens to be different; Luke Preston. He was kinda unpopular back in the 9th grade and in 10th grade he became a hottie hot hottie. He dated one of Emily's friends and broke up with her by email. Not a good idea guys. Anyways Emily and friends decide to make a guidebook on what to do for guys. She and her friends decide to test it on Luke Preston by dating him and breaking up with him.
It backfires, naturally and everyone blames Emily, even her best friends(you have to read the book to find out why). I agree, what she did was wrong and mean, but her friends were part of it just like her. Emily was also just so juvenile. It's not wrong being nice. But it was a good book because of Luke. He was really sweet and nice in a way and funny, and he didn't deserve to be treated like that. But it was a nice book so I recommend teens to get it.
