Excerpt from Tales of Fishes

We trolled up the river and down, across from one rush-lined lily-padded Shore to the other, for miles and miles with never a strike. But I was con tent, for over me had been cast the dreamy, care dispelling languor of the South.

Zane Grey's “Tales of Florida Fishes” is the first-of-a-kind, comprehensive collection of his original magazine articles and essays, all devoted to his fishing adventures in Florida from 1911 to 1925. This book, with several maps and a useful index, ‎offers a rare glimpse into a unique geographical area and important time period. It contains over 40 rarely seen historic photographs. Grey also reveals a bit of his philosophy of life seen through his passion for fishing from more than a decade of his annual exploration of a Florida that exists now only in history and imagination. ‎Grey’s detailed description of "Rivers of the Everglades", once impenetrable, offers an especially superb introduction to this still remote area, and still very far off the beaten track as it was 100 years ago.

Most of Zane Grey's magazine articles in this publication are presented in their entirety. The longer and later essays are excerpted and explained. See the Table of Contents of this ZGWS publication for a hint at the scope of Grey's fascination with fishing in Florida waters.

Tales of Fishes Classic Reprint Zane Grey 9781332435241 Books Reviews

Ordered this large print book for my mother-in-law since she loves Zane Grey but the only appealing thing about this book after I got it was the attractive cover. The text seems to be fish stories illustrated by grainy black and white images. Not what my mother-in-law would care to read.
When purchasing this, I really had no idea what to expect.
I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it!

Its a collection of stories by the author about his adventures and happenings out fishing.

It slightly reminds me of The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway....

It has kept me turning pages throughout! I enjoyed reading it through! I am glad I purchased it. -)
My husband really likes Zane Grey's books. Not so much for the writing style but for the information the author gives on the subject that few men can give. Mr. Grey has been on fishing adventures that few men have gone on and to be able to read about them is the reason for the books. My husband has read all of the fishing books Mr. Grey has written and he has really enjoyed them all. This and other books are recommended for fishermen wanted to read about expeditions and experiences that no man can relate to now.
Zane Grey's fishing expeditions just didn't keep my interest.
Zane Grey writes with passion and exquisite detail, clearly his best writing.
He has the capacity to put one there with him as he experiences each fishing endeavor.
His frustrations and triumphs leave a lasting memory that we can personally
relate to. He intertwines wonder and curiosity into the tapestry of his adventures.
They have the universal appeal as he transcends mere story telling into a lasting
remembrance . It has the appeal of life, the very marrow of existence , the essence
of the natural world comes through. .
Being an avid fisherman of Catalina and San Clemente Islands for many years, I found this book to be an excellent read.
Mr. Grey was indeed a true "sportsman", conservationist, and visionary.
He predicted the downfall of the tuna and swordfish populations due to commercial fishing as far back as 1917.
This was a time when fishing equipment was not for the faint-of-heart, and fishing boats were not turbo-charged diesels with the most modern electronics of side scanning sonar, radar, and other means of increasing one's chances at catching a boatload of fish.
He was a true pioneer of the "catch and release" motto.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories, and appreciated the prose and style of one of our great authors in American history.
Let me say right up front, I am not a fisherman, but I am a lover of Zane Grey and his books. I have enjoyed his westerns and historical fiction for 40 years, and have always wanted these "fishing" books to finish my collection of his works. This book does not disappoint if you like Zane Grey as a writer; for he tells each tale as he tells his westerns with the same descriptive finesse and appreciation of the environment around him. The stories in this book are a diverse group, ranging from Tampico, Mexico, the Yucatan, to Avalon and Catalina Island off the California cost. The fish he goes after are as varied--tarpoon, swordfish, tuna and more. Buy this book, sit back and relax as Zane Grey takes you fishing all over the world.
