The Veil of Night almost has a gothic feel. There is a brooding hero and a woman with no chaperone alone in his house save some faithful servants. On some levels it passes muster especially when it comes to the descriptive writing of the castle. Ms Joyce does an excellent job of creating a dark, estate with drawn curtains and candle lit halls. Where it falls a little are the characters. The heroine was not as vibrant as the hero.

Lady Victoria Wakefield arrives at the Duke of Raeburn's home with a purpose; she intends to make the Duke forgive her brother's debt. She really has no plan other than her very strong will. Lady Wakefield dresses as an old spinster and she believes she is one but she wants to be a respectable woman also and her brother's losses could ruin her family's name.

Byron Stratford, Duke of Raeburn is a mysterious eccentric man. He is known by the ton to only socialize at night and he is reclusive. Byron is intrigued by the feisty and tart tongued Victoria and he suggests a proposal. Victoria shares his bed for a week and he will delay collecting on the debt until Victoria's brother comes into his inheritance. Victoria says yes to the proposal for her own reasons, she is drawn to the Duke and she wants to explore her desires.

The leads have a very passionate relationship and it begins almost immediately, no waiting to know each other, the Duke knows he only has a week. Yet these two really do share some of their innermost secrets, or rather Victoria shares hers and she resents that Byron is a mystery. She wonders why he shuns the daylight and why she cannot control her feelings for this enigmatic man.

Byron is kind yet also forceful. He is a contradiction and he is a very lonely man. Really both characters are lonely but Victoria does not take stock of her feelings nearly as much as Byron does although she does read Byron's moods correctly at times.

Victoria can be pushy and she is hard headed. Byron has faults too but his are more understandable in light of his past and his affliction. He is noble and self sacrificing in many ways but the reader can feel his frustrations at his physical limitations.

This novel needed a little more character development when it came to the heroine. Her decision to become a spinster really was not explored thoroughly and her family dynamics were not well told either. Still the leads had a nice connection and the hero was brave.

The Veil of Night Signet Eclipse Lydia Joyce 9780451214836 Books Reviews

Sorry Ms. Klausner. This is not a paranormal romance. There are no ghosts, vampires, time-travel or otherwise supernatural elements.I almost didn't read this book based on that previous review. Thankfully I had already bought the book and decided to give it a try. Boy, am I glad I did.

Byron Stratford is just the kind of hero I like. He's dark and tortured. He's not perfect but is never cruel to our heroine. Lady Victoria Raeburn is a spinster with a secret. She's given up on life in a way and shocked to find that she is a desirable woman. She shows up at the spooky manor to plead the case of her brother who owes Stratford money. Stratford wants revenge for wrongs done. He draws up a contract with Victoria. He will delay payment if she will stay with him for one week. Thats the basis of the plot but it doesn't begin to do justice to this wonderfully written book. It's hard to keep my attention these days. This book did.

The author has a very descriptive writing style. The gothic feel of the book comes across in a wonderful way. The two main characters have an instant attraction. I get so tired of "I hate you. Lets go to bed". There is conflict but no hate. The only quibble I have is that the reason for the hero's condition is never fully explained. But, after all this is fiction.

Do yourself a favor and give this gifted new author a try. You won't regret it.
Lydia Joyce's THE VEIL OF NIGHT is a story marked with emotion, personal conflict, and mystery. And for good measure, the author throws in intelligence, maturity, and wit. Now that's not a bad combination for a debut novel.

Lady Victoria Wakefield hides beneath a protective shield. She lives her life behind ugly clothes and a cold smile. She sits on the sidelines and watches the world move around her. Victoria Wakefield is a cool, collected spinster. Perhaps, her life is dull and unexciting, but it will never disappoint her!

Disappointments and rejection are exactly what Byron Stratford, the Duke of Raeburn, expects from life. Personal letdowns make his existence miserable. Strange and mysterious rumors surround Raeburn. He purposely adds to the furor. Eccentric hours, exaggerated clothing, libertine parties, and a succession of mistresses have kept the stories current and circulating. It is evident the strange, unapproachable Duke of Raeburn fiendishly revels behind the scandalous hoopla.

Lydia Joyce takes Byron Stratford and Victoria Wakefield and convinces her reader they are indeed soul mates! THE VEIL OF NIGHT is their out-of-the-ordinary courtship. It is a melodramatic offering, yet it is neither exaggeratedly emotional nor sickeningly sentimental. It is dark and compelling, perhaps a little too psychological, perhaps a little too gothic. It is definitely not a feel good romance, yet it is riveting!
