Before the Moon Rises Ritter Werewolves Book 1 edition by Catherine Bybee Paranormal Romance eBooks

3.5/5 (RabidReads.com)Two years ago I bought this novella and promptly forgot I had it until a couple of days ago. I jumped in not remembering even what it was about-although the cover was a pretty big clue. Wolf on the cover? I am so up for it!

Janet O’Brien is an emergency room nurse that works the night shift. When a gorgeous nude man shows up there unconscious, her long, hectic shift gets pretty interesting, to say the least. Max Ritter is a werewolf, and it’s the full moon. He spends the three days of the full moon each month searching for werewolves that hunt and change people against their will. It’s what his werewolf family does. He can’t remember exactly why he was unconscious, but when he realizes that the wolf he has been hunting is also at the ER and has set his sights on Janet, he asks her out to breakfast to keep her safe.

There’s not that many characters developed due to the shortness of the story. I found Janet to be a good character, but I think I enjoyed Max’s character the most. He’s the alpha male type, and extremely rich and handsome. He’s found his mate, and he’s determined to keep her safe from the bad guy, Gorman. Gorman is just evil, with no redeeming qualities. I also liked Max’s human brother, Richard. He was a fun character, amused watching while Max falls for Janet, especially when Max changes to a wolf, and Janet sees him for the first time-not knowing that it is Max.

This ended up being not only a sweet romance, but it also was a thriller of sorts. There is some scary moments, and of course some sexy moments, as well. Since it is a novella, the romance had to happen fast, but when a wolf finds his mate, I find that acceptable.

I enjoyed this read-but as usual with a novella, I did wish for more story, more romance, and more character development. But I do know that goes with the territory. I look forward to reading the next book, Embracing the Wolf, featuring Richard. I would recommend this to paranormal romance readers. Good fast read, for those that just want something quick to read.

Before the Moon Rises Ritter Werewolves Book 1 edition by Catherine Bybee Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

I tend to be hesitant in reading short stories as I fear I wont connect to the characters and the story will be rushed etc. however I am pleasantly surprised and pleased when reading novels such as “Before the Moon Rises” as I find all I need, action, romance, humour, shape shifting, and a desire to keep turning those pages to find out more

The story begins with Janet a nurse working the ER during the full moon shift (no pun intended) which she despises, to have a “John Doe” (Max) turn up naked and knocked out on her shift. While having a little perve on her John Doe and putting the catheter into his privates he awakes startling her. I must admit I laughed when Max awoke to the comment of “don’t you think I should know your name first?” to have Janet grab that ever bit harder down below.

There is an instant attraction from both so when Max sees Gorman a sworn enemy he uses this as an excuse to ask her to breakfast in order to get her safely away from him and spend more time with her.

They spend the day together, with a hot and heavy kiss goes to show with good writing a kiss can be just as erotic as sex. Upon their return Gorman has ransacked Janet’s home, as Max can smell him so Janet goes to stay with Max until all is sorted out. Max finally realises that every time they kiss or when they make love his body trembles, proving to him that she is his soulmate

At this stage Janet is still unaware that Max is a werewolf, and as he needs to turn he appears in an interesting manner for the night with the help of his brother Richard who choses not to turn as the Ritter brothers have the choice.

Gorman’s need to take Janet away from Max is explained and he kidnaps her for all to fall into place for him to become the alpha and leader of his pack. He leaves a matchbox behind with the title “Before The Moon Rises” for Max who calls upon all his pack to help him hunt down Gorman and find his mate.

It’s an interesting finale to the book when Max reaches Janet and Gorman and needs to change to save Janet, so for the first time she sees who he truly is. Janet escapes to have both packs go into battle.

Max’s is victorious but will he also be victorious personally now that Janet knows what he is and feels betrayed. Having the romance and happy ever after storyline you know all will end blissfully. Again an interesting non expected but overly sweet gesture (for me) from Max wins Janet over

As a non-shifter I have to admit I am extremely looking forward to reading the next instalment based on Max’s brother Richard and where or how the shape shifting topic will be broached
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would and it has piqued my interest in other books by this author. I can say that I would have liked it to have been a little longer because I was really into it just as started getting to the end. This was a fast paced story that managed to introduce the characters in a way that made them real and give you the entire run-down on what was going on in their world. While the romance was almost instantaneous, it gave meaning to the males need to protect. Not to mention the fact that shifters always seem to fall in love/lust immediately.

Max Ritter is found in the middle of Los Angeles naked and unconscious, he is taken to the hospital and meets Janet O'Brien, the nurse taking care of him. Also at the hospital is Gorman, the werewolf he has been following. When he sees that Gorman has set his sights on Janet what else can he do but try and protect her. Though they have an instant attraction Janet has no idea what Max is and he does not enlighten her even though he knows the danger that stalks her. The Ritter's are a family of werewolves who are sworn to protect people from being killed or turned but can they do it when it's most important to them and Max.

This was a really good story about the good and evil that can be found within the werewolf community with a villain who was evil and had plans for everything and everyone. Our good guy was rich, handsome, and almost to good to be true. Then there is the nurse, Janet, who has found herself between two adversaries without knowing the real cost to her.

Fast, sexy, brutal, and engrossing!
