Is 2012 our last year of existence? Is a killer planetary object on a collision course with Earth? What is the Mayan doomsday prophecy and should I go ahead and get one of those sweet car loans with a balloon payment in 2015?

The looming apocalypse has never been so much fun with this latest book in the acclaimed Pocket Guide series by Jason Boyett. Pocket Guide to 2012 approaches the 2012 doomsday phenomenon with the author's trademark blend of entertainment and education. Equally snarky and illuminating, it explores the history of mankind's end-times obsession, explains the origins of the 2012 prophecy, and investigates the predicted scenarios that will probably (not) lead to the extinction of humanity on or around December 21, 2012.

Pocket Guide to 2012 Your OnceinaLifetime Guide to Not Completely Freaking Out edition by Jason Boyett Religion Spirituality eBooks

Jason does his homework, which is more than we can say for most of the nut-jobs referenced in the book. This is a very interesting survey of all the kooks and charlatans who have tried (and in some cases, are still trying) to gain notoriety and loot by claiming to have figured out when it's all going to end. The world, that is, not the avalanche of kooks and charlatans; we can count on our education system to ensure a never-ending supply of those. Highly recommended.

Pocket Guide to 2012 Your OnceinaLifetime Guide to Not Completely Freaking Out edition by Jason Boyett Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Until I read this pocket guide, any explanation I reviewed was boring, incomplete or forayed into the author's la-la land I didn't care to learn about. As with his other Pocket Guides, Boyett lays a foundation of easy to digest historical, religious, and in this case, astrological detail to provide a complete (and humorous) take on 12/21/12. A thoroughly great read providing "something to think about" once finished.
As with all of Jason Boyett's Pocket Guides, this one is full of information and humor. He makes it fun to learn and you will find yourself laughing out loud throughout. Whether you simply ponder the end of the world, wonder if the Mayans were onto something, or happen to be in a cult somewhere about to take the little blue pill - this book is for you!
The first and most important thing you get from reading this book is perspective - when you see just how enamored the human race has always been with these "end-of-the-world" predictions, it seems to make all of the hype and hysteria about 2012 (or 2011's Harold Camping predictions, or the multiple Y2k predictions) seem like the minor diversions they are.

Jason's style is fast-paced and fun, and yet with every page you find yourself saying, "Wow, I never knew that before - boy do I ever have some great material for the next party conversation!"

Seriously, if every book designed to offer facts, insights, and historical context were presented this way, we'd be a much smarter, funnier group of people.
With the definitive end of the world nearly upon us in 2012, now is a fantastic time to pick up Jason Boyett's newest Pocket Guide. In it, he lays out pretty much every end-time prophesy that has been passed down. I was really impressed with the level of research that went into this short book.

It's a quick read, so if Jason is wrong, you'll still be able to finish it before the end of the world. And at under $4, you'll still have some cash left for constructing your doomsday bunker.

I appreciate that while Jason writes a tremendously funny and informative book, he also manages to avoid just being mean. When you start talking about the apocalypse, it's pretty easy to slip into a tone that simply mocks, but I didn't read that in this book. Okay, he might have mocked the doomsday chicken. But otherwise, it was humorous without being cutting.

No matter your personal feelings about the end of the world, this ebook is one you should purchase. Thanks, Jason, for making the end of the world a little bit brighter.
As a kid, I never thought about apocalyptic scenarios until the Jonestown incident in 1978, which, frankly, creeped me out. When or how the world ends doesn't interest me half as much as the psychology behind why certain people feel the need to predict it and why the public feels the need to panic over these predictions. The predictions always ended up failing as far as I know. So, in Jason Boyett's "Pocket Guide to 2012 Your Once-in-a-Lifetime Guide to Not Completely Freaking Out", I enjoyed his hilarious take on the "why," the "how" and the "when" of end-of-the-world predictions.

It's amazing how, as Boyett says, "those who don't learn from history are doomed to speculate fiery apocalypse again on Tuesday." This book contains entries of doom predictions from the beginning of known history. The same scenario unfolds itself over and over in different years in different locations person uses influence in politics, religion as well as big, scary numbers to predict Armageddon; panic ensues; deadline passes; person loses credibility.

For such a serious topic, Boyett's use of humor is genius. This book is great entertainment, but wait; the reader actually learns something, too. And "Pocket Guide to 2012" is short enough to be read in only one or two sittings (or maybe more if used as bathroom reading material). However, he does tone down the snarky remarks for more contemporary entries such as the Jonestown incident and the Davidian Branch disaster in 1993.

As you may know, 2012 is also a key year for end-of-the-world fans. A chapter is dedicated to the whole Mayan thing that everyone is talking about. But, whether you are an Armageddon aficionado or just looking for something fun to read, "Pocket Guide to 2012" should help you get through those particular 365 days. Wait, 366 days. Sorry--leap year.
An amazing read! Jason does a great job taking 1000's of years of end times predictions and gathering them in a funny and informative way. Both learned more and laughed more than imagined! Get your friends to buy it too (don't share, it's only $4). Leads to great discussions!
Jason Boyett brings the same wit and snark to the 2012 end-of-the-world mania that you'll find in his other Pocket Guides. Through an illuminating rapid fire tour of apocalyptic mayhem you'll learn that Harold Camping isn't the only repeat offender when it comes to bad predictions, end of times predictions have been in vogue since just after time began and that wackos haven't changed much since then. Will this book prepare you to face the end of the world? No. Will it make you laugh along the way? Yup. Buy the book. Read it. Laugh out loud.
